TimeEventDetails

5:00pm- 6:00pm

The Keeton Suicide Awareness Scholarship
Scholarship amount: $2,000 to one student
Requirements:
? Must be a senior in high school graduating in May 2021.
? Must show up to school cleanup day on May 12th, 5:00pm and sign name.
Suicide is a sickness within our nation that runs deeper than surface level. In order to make a change for suicide rates we must dig to the root of the issue. Our world is sick. Our society is sick. Out of sickness comes depression, anxiety, hopelessness, and despair. We struggle to find hope in ourselves when we cannot see hope in our future. Our lack of community, the decrease in family and friend time, the increase in time spent in front of screens, and a bleak outlook into the future due to a growing rise in waste can cause us to lose sight of a hopeful future.
It is my belief that by attacking the root of the issue, we can find a more productive way of preventing suicide. That is why this year instead of an essay the only requirement for the Keeton Suicide Awareness Scholarship is to show up on May 12th, 2021 at 5:00pm in the high school parking lot to clean up the schoolyard and surrounding areas. All students will have to do is bring as many family and friends as they can, sign their name on the scholarship signup sheet (must be a graduating senior to receive the scholarship), and pick up as much trash and recyclables as they can in the area surrounding the high school. All of the names on the signup sheet will be put into a bucket and a name will be drawn at random to determine the winner of the 2021 Keeton Suicide Awareness Scholarship.
Trash and recycle bags will be provided, we will still work rain or shine. All trash and recyclables will be loaded into a truck; recyclables will be taken to a recycle plant and trash will be taken to a landfill.
The goal of this project will be to spend time with one another and other members of the community, and also to make the community and world a better, cleaner, happier place. A randomized winner will demonstrate how suicide can affect anyone at random and also provide a fair playing ground to allow anyone who cares about community and the world to go forward and make an impact.
I hope to see you there. Let?s prevent suicide by bringing hope back into our community, our hearts, our minds, and the future.
